I See Nails Only. Good or Bad?

The Law of Instrument suggests that we naturally have a cognitive bias that involves a reliance on a familiar tool. As Abraham Maslow said in 1996, “I suppose it is tempting, if the only tool you have is a hammer, to treat everything as if it were a nail.” The original spirit of the argument applies to analysis and research. It was telling you not to view everything using the same lens and be open minded to different approach.

That was an excellent advice when you are analyzing an issue. However I noticed an interesting area where the opposite is true. In the area of personal development in business and career where you are the hammer, your best bet is to see things as nails.

Find Your Own Style- From Experience and Personality

What do I really mean by seeing things as nails? You have to find and develop own style in your own career or business. If your want to know how to best develop in your own career or business, you have to look at your own experience and personality.

Example 1) Steve Jobs had a background in calligraphy. His understanding in the art of simplicity and elegance helped him in designing iPhone.

Example 2) Zhang Yi Ming had a robust engineering background. He had worked as a chief technology officer in a social media start-up. He subsequently founded a search engine company for real-estate business…
